Over the coming weeks, I will be adding a match programme for each of the games that I have focused on in Dirty Old Town.
This is the programme from the League Division Four match against Barnsley at the Racecourse on 08/01/66. Wrexham won the game 6-3.
Rowley’s first game in charge against Barnsley looked tough on paper as the Yorkshire side were in the top ten while the Reds only had two clubs below them in the league. Barnsley were bigger and physically stronger than Wrexham, who included four teenagers. One of them was 17-year-old outside-right John Lloyd, son of club secretary Cliff Lloyd, who was making his debut. Our inexperienced line-up also included 18-year-old centre half Graham Turner while Graham Beighton was a new face between the sticks after signing from Stockport County the day previously.
The chapter goes on to summarise the match against Barnsley, our season at this level – cups and all – as each chapter in Dirty Old Town does. This creates the ideal Xmas gift for all true Wrexham fans.
