100 Cult Movies – Progress Report

100 Cult Movies – Progress Report

I have come to a decision. There is no way I can sit through all of the movies on this list. I will continue to watch most of them as it is a good way of broadening my cinematic horizons, but many of them that are based around drug taking and gruesome murder will not be showing in my home cinema. I simply refuse to sit through some films.

Trainspotting is a very good example of the type of film that I will not be wasting my time with. As most of you will know, this film focuses on drug users shooting up heroin in the seedy slums of Glasgow. However much this film can be applauded for the infamous toilet scene, this black comedy drama has me wincing throughout as I cannot stand watching needles piercing skin. I did try to watch it the other week and lasted all of two minutes as I was transported to the first time I watched this film at the cinema back in 1996. I couldn’t look at the screen for long periods and I remember the relief I felt once the end credits rolled. I didn’t tell anyone at the time, because this was suppose to be a cool film for our generation. That is bollocks. I shouldn’t have to watch people wasting their lives away over drugs and even if there is a positive outcome, I don’t need to watch people suffering due to their own stupidity.

There are actually a few films on this Cult Movie list that I have problems with and therefore wont be watching. I have tried to sit through a few – Repo Man and The Deer Hunter – but only lasted 30 minutes due to no following a flimsy plot and having little patience when I have other things that need doing. Controversially, I also couldn’t sit through Fight Club even though others rave about it. I found the opening scenes to contain too much dialogue and I struggled to keep up with the subtitles that were rapidly changing. There is no pleasing some people. I actually prefer films to have plenty of dialogue, but I must be able to understand and follow the subtitles.

One film that I did watch the other day and absolutely loved was Karate Kid. There was so much here that I could relate to, such as homesickness and bullying. I did think that I had watched this film during my childhood, but after watching it last week I am not too sure. In any case, I really enjoyed watching something that I could identify with and I instantly warmed to the characters.

I am not pretending that I am not a man that is full of contradictions. Even though it is set in the future in a post nuclear age where robots rule the roost, I found The Terminator to be a decent piece of escapism that I enjoyed. I think what I should do is replace some of the movies that appear on the Cult Movie list with films that I know that I will appreciate. I cannot believe that this list does not include any films directed by Woody Allen or Alfred Hitchcock. Maybe these directors don’t make films that are given cult status? I would argue against this, but I have included a video below that hopefully explains why certain films are given cult status.

In conclusion, I am really happy that my sister purchased this Cult Movie poster as a festive gift as it has reintroduced me to some cinematic classics and made me reflect and consider my personal tastes and preferences. I will be continuing to keep you up to date with the films I watch throughout 2021, although I have got up this morning to find that WordPress have updated their Dashboard system yet again and made it more difficult for me to maintain this site regularly as I have been doing. I really need to think about moving away from WordPress, but I do not have the technical expertise to do this. If anyone can help me then please do get in touch.
