Postcard #11 Received

Postcard #11 Received

Last night I received my eleventh postcard from End to End after recording 1050 miles of my trip along Route 66. I have copied the text in the email below so that my readers can follow the story of my trip. I have also linked this paragraph to the End to End website which I encourage everyone to look at. As I continue to chip away at my virtual journey along Route 66, I also wonder if I can count on your support and encouragement by sponsoring me. My JustGiving page is linked to at the bottom of this page.

Texas is larger than any country in Europe.

Texas is full of surprises and it’s pretty quirky, and all it takes is a look at its legal code to see that. The state still has plenty of strange, antiquated laws that will definitely raise your eyebrows. For instance, it’s illegal to sell your eye, to dust a public building with a feather duster, to milk somebody else’s cow, and to shoot a buffalo from the second story of a hotel. And you absolutely cannot let a camel run loose on the beaches of Galveston. On the other hand, it’s totally legal for you to shoot and kill Bigfoot if you happen to see him out and about.

Authentic Tex-Mex is a fusion of Mexican, Tejano, and American traditions. Chow down on some fajitas, try yourself a breakfast taco—and don’t you dare leave the state without getting a taste of classic Tex-Mex queso. You’ll also want to scoop up some chili, which is the official state dish, and chips and salsa, which is the official state appetizer. Yum!

Did you know there’s only one place called “Earth” in the world?—and it’s located in Texas in the plains of Llano Estacado.

Fun fact: Dr Pepper was invented in Texas in 1885. The recipe is a secret and is kept in two halves in safety deposit boxes located in two different Dallas banks.

If you’re up for a real challenge, The Big Texan in Amarillo has been featured on numerous food television shows and is known worldwide for its famous 72-ounce steak challenge (price: free … if you can finish it and all the sides in less than an hour).

Amarillo also houses too many well-known theatres and art shows, as well as everyone’s favourite space museum, the Don Harrington Discovery Center and Space Theater. And the iconic Cadillac Ranch, this is one of those spectacles you have to see to believe. It’s not every day you get to see a road lined with Cadillacs buried nose first, painted in technicolor from bumper to bumper. Travelling to Amarillo will surely enlighten your musical senses and mind, so why not take a brief visit for a little bit of sightseeing?
