I am changing the design of my bungalow yet again. I am always chopping and changing design ideas for my home and am currently redesigning the space in which I live around a Cinematic theme.
My mannequin has transformed herself into Princess Leia, there are multiple movie posters up, I have new clocks – one of which is in the shape of a clapperboard and other movie memorabilia is on its way.
This morning I took delivery of a set of 75 promotional advertising postcards that they used to give away for free at cinemas. I am not sure if they still do this as it has been so long since I last went to a cinema. If they still do offer free postcards then please do let me know so that I can add to my modest collection.
The bundle of cards that I received include three that were issued by the Department of Education and Employment that challenge perceptions and stereotypes around disability. These are really positive postcards and I thought I would share them with my readers. Can you really imagine such positive images being produced nowadays? I am not 100% sure on when these postcards were produced, but I am fairly certain that It was during the 1990’s under a Labour Government.
Whenever it was, it was definitely before the age of austerity when disabled people became scapegoats for Tory incompetence…
Underneath the statement that ”Sex can be a problem” is a picture of a bloke using a wheelchair with an able bodied woman sitting on his knee. The writing beside it explains that the problem is that ” Helen is a screamer”
We are told that Kathy is hard to control. Many of us will assume that this is because of her disability but it turns out that just like any other fashion conscious young lady Kathy struggles to control her spending. She states that ”if it’s leather, I have to have it”
We are led to believe that Sue’s disability causes her to be an embarrassment, but on closer inspection we are told that the embarrassment comes from her dirty laugh.
