Emergency on Planet Earth #45

I WILL WRITE A NUMBER OF EMERGENCY ON PLANET EARTH BLOGS THROUGHOUT THE TORY SPONSORED CORONAVIRUS CRISIS.

What follows is a random collection of thoughts from a human being trapped in 21st Century British society.

It appears that the Covid-19 crisis is rearing its ugly head once again, so I thought I had better put together one of these blogs in a series that never really finished.

As the Coronavirus situation blows up once again in our hapless Government’s face, I find myself in a remarkably similar situation to the one I faced back in March when we first entered lockdown. Of course, as with everything in my life, this revolves around my staffing situation.

Everyone knows that I am looking for something – or more specifically someone – to rely on. It is true that I already have staff and friends that I can depend on, but now that I receive 24/7 support, there can be no argument that I need a greater number of employees.

Within the past week I have had a number of interviews. I have had a fair few candidates that just weren’t suitable for a variety of reasons and it is not easy trying to find someone that you can happily work with. I need to be able to look forward to seeing all staff members when they report to work. The feeling should be mutual and include mutual love and respect.

At least those that weren’t suitable actually turned up. I have had a candidate who didn’t even bother to turn up and didn’t even email me to let me know that she couldn’t be arsed turning up.

Even more agonising is when you think you have found that ideal person who would be perfectly suited to the role in question. The interview goes really well and they answer every question in the correct manner. All the right boxes are ticked and my hopes, that I may have reached the end of my arduous search, are raised.

This has happened twice in the last couple of weeks, but after a few days I have had emails regretting that the candidate can no longer take the position on offer. I can sympathise that the hours on offer are not suited to everyone, but i am willing to change the hours available as after losing two wonderful candidates, it is clear that changes need to be made.

What is so frustrating about this is that I have spent the last six years, campaigning for independent living for disabled people across Wales. I like to think that I have helped many people achieve the lives that they want and it does not seem fair that after all my effort, my life is far from ideal.

I guess that is the way the cookie crumbles, but I am not really complaining as I am super proud that I may have helped even one person to stand up (so to speak) for their rights.

Hopefully, by remaining positive, things will change in the next week or so. Only time will tell, but surely I am due to catch a break…

From Wikipedia:

Keane are an English alternative rock band from Battle, East Sussex, formed in 1995. The band currently comprises Tom Chaplin (lead vocals, electric/acoustic guitar), Tim Rice-Oxley (piano, synthesisers, bass guitar, backing vocals), Richard Hughes (drums, percussion, backing vocals), and Jesse Quin (bass guitar, acoustic/electric guitar, backing vocals). Their original line-up included founder and guitarist Dominic Scott, who left in 2001.

Keane achieved mainstream, international success with the release of their debut album, Hopes and Fears, in 2004. Topping the UK charts, the album won the 2005 Brit Award for Best British Album and was the second best-selling British album of 2004.[4] It is one of the best-selling albums in UK chart history.[5] Their second album, Under the Iron Sea, released in 2006, topped the UK album charts and debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200. Their third album, Perfect Symmetry, was released in October 2008.

In May 2008, both Hopes and Fears (number 13) and Under the Iron Sea (number 8) were voted by readers of Q magazine as among the best British albums ever, with Keane, The BeatlesOasis and Radiohead the only artists having two albums in the top 20.[6] In 2009, Hopes and Fears was listed as the ninth best-selling album of the 2000s decade in the UK.[7] Their EP, Night Train, was released in May 2010. Their fourth studio album, Strangeland, was released in May 2012, and peaked at number one on the UK Albums Chart.

Keane are known for using keyboards as the lead instrument instead of guitars, differentiating them from most other rock bands.[8] The inclusion of a distorted piano effect in 2006 and various synthesisers were a common feature in their music[9][10] which developed on the second and third albums. Keane have sold over 13 million records worldwide.[11]

The band released their fifth studio album Cause and Effect on 20 September 2019. It was announced on 6 June 2019 with the release of lead single “The Way I Feel”.
