WEDNESDAY 23 MAY 2018 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.
I’W RYDDHAU AR UNWAITH – DYDD MERCHER 23 MAI 2018
Responding to the updated written statement on the Welsh Independent Living Grant by Welsh Government minister for Minister for Children, Older People and Social Care, Huw Irranca-Davies, Sian Gwenllian AM and Plaid Cymru shadow spokesperson for equalities said,
“The Labour Minister’s decision not to restore the Independent Living Grant in Wales is shameful and will result in hundreds of some of our most vulnerable people losing out. It beggars belief that the Labour Welsh Government has chosen to follow a policy first introduced by the Conservative UK government to force local authorities, who are already struggling with limited funding, to face the additional pressures of meeting the needs of people who received this grant.
There is no evidence that there remains the same level of support for disabled people as a result of the transition period.
Both Scotland and northern Ireland retained a central fund for the Independent Living Grant. Welsh Labour’s own party conference voted for this to be restored – why are the Labour led Welsh Government refusing to do the same? This is another example of the Labour led Welsh Government following Conservative policies rather than abiding by their party’s decisions.”
